`Cost of study in Japan lower than US, UK'

Knowing Japanese language is useful but it is not mandatory to study in Japan. If you were to compare the total cost per programme in Japan to the US or UK universities, then the cost of study in a Japanese university is quite low. These are some of the myths being demystified at a two-day Japan Education Fair being organized for the first time in Gujarat at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA).

“There are over 80 national universities, 90 public universities and approximately 600 private universities. It’s always advantageous for a person to know some amount of Japanese but it isn’t compulsory for a foreign student. Many Japanese universities offer courses in English in se lected disciplines,” said Daisuke Kodama, first secretary , Embassy of Japan, New Delhi. Top 30 Japanese universities are inviting students from across the world to pursue higher education in Japan as part of `Global 30′ initiative by the Japanese government.

Kodama said: “Typically , the cost of pursuing higher education in a Japanese university ranges from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 13 lakh, including the hostel fees. If you talk to any student studying in the US or the UK, the cost is much higher, almost two to three times. Moreover, many Japanese universities offer complete waiver of tuition fees to keep an international atmosphere on their campuses.”

Mukesh Patel, president of Indo-Japan Friendship Association in Gujarat, said: “Japan has remained unnoticed in terms of higher education for Indian and more particularly Gujarati students. The whole objective behind organizing this fair is to break myths related to higher education in Japan and we are greatly enthused by the very encouraging response received in this direction.”

The second day of the fair will see organizers conducting a robotic workshop, where participants will make their own robots. Representative of five Japanese universities will also conduct one-to-one counselling for all interested candidates at the AMA, from 10am to 4pm on Sunday .
